Obituary

Walter Ellis Brown, born January 13, 1935, departed this life to join his loving wife in heaven on August 17, 2026, at the age of 91.

He was born on the family farm near Estacado, Texas to Warren Ellis and Ivy Mae Brown.  The family moved to Lorenzo in 1936 where he grew up and would remain his entire life among family and lifelong friends that he loved dearly.

He attended Lorenzo schools, graduating from Lorenzo High School in 1954.

On September 12th, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Cherry, who would be his loving wife for the next 72 years.  Following their wedding, the couple moved to Canyon, Texas where Walter attended West Texas State University while starting a family.  The family returned to make their home in Lorenzo in 1956 where Walter began his farming career.  He joined his father and uncles on the Brown family farm near Estacado where he farmed actively for thirty-four years until 1990.  While drawing his first career to a close, he began his second career as a contract mail carrier for the postal service.  He spent over 30 years as a mail carrier – a job that allowed him to roam the country roads he knew so well and cultivate a collection of relationships that he truly cherished.

Walter loved music and was a talented vocalist, trained by his mother, a superb violinist. He shared his voice countless times at school and church gatherings, weddings, funerals, and other community events. His love for singing and his farm work often intertwined – it's said that area farmers could hear him singing as he worked in the cotton fields, his voice carried on the breeze.

He was a steadfast and active member of the Lorenzo Methodist Church, and for over 70 years he actively supported the community as well – through membership in Jaycees and Lions Club; serving the city as City Mayor, Council member, and Civil Defense Director; serving the school as School Board member and Booster Club member; coaching little league baseball; and other roles too numerous to list.

He was a loving and devoted husband and father.  His strong faith formed the foundation of love and support he faithfully provided to his family.  His values will survive for generations through the family that he loved so dearly.  He will be missed deeply by so many who knew and loved him.  He was always generous, humble and kind: always with a smile on his face, song in his voice and love in his heart.  He was a gentleman and a truly gentle man.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; his parents, Warren Ellis and Ivy Mae Brown; his brother, Joe Warren Brown; daughter-in-law Rene Brown; and grandson Guy Jones.

He is survived by four children: daughters Edie Tunstall and husband Ken; Martha Keene and husband Keith; sons Bobby Brown; and Charlie Brown and wife Amberly.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Samye Hildebrandt and husband Casey; Casey Jo Britton and husband Kyle; Megan Hill and husband Tate; Ellis Brown; Adam Brown; Jenner Brown and wife Ashley; and Walt Brown; and five great-grandchildren: Kaleb, Jolie, Jace, and Holt Hildebrandt; and Jude Griffin Brown.

Visitation will be held Friday, August 21, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home in Lorenzo.

Joint funeral services for Walter (and his wife, Patricia who passed away on August 8) will be held at 10:00 a.m. on August 22, 2026, at First Methodist Church in Lorenzo.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Library of Legacies for their care and attention over the past year. Memorials may be made to First Methodist Church in Lorenzo in Walter's memory
