Visitation will take place on December 27, 2016 at Adams Funeral Home in Ralls from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. She died on December 21, 2016 after a lengthy illness.
She was born January 15, 1930 to William Edward and Elsie (Styles) Akin in Lubbock, Texas. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1946 and earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Texas Technological College in 1950 and 1956, respectively. She married Adrian J. Taylor of Ralls on December 22, 1956; he preceded her in death on June 15, 1984. She married J.B. Morrison on October 20, 1993.
Norma began her career in public school teaching in the fall of 1950. Usually opinionated, sometimes controversial, always fervent in her desire to see her students learn and succeed, she touched hundreds of lives in her forty-two years as a public school educator. Early in her career she taught in Wellington, Tulia, Abernathy and Lubbock, and more than thirty of those forty-two years were dedicated to elementary school students in Ralls; where she and Adrian made their home. As a committed, spirited, educator she held local and statewide posts in the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) and Delta Kappa Gamma (a professional sorority of key women teachers). She was also active in Crosby County Farmers Union, Crosby County Democrats, Texas Tech Ex-Students Association and the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum.
Norma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ralls and taught adult Sunday school there for more than twenty years. She strongly supported all of her family's activities, especially Pack and Troop 333 and the Boy Scouts of America. She spent countless hours at den meetings, water-melon busts, car-pooling R.A. basketball, cooking and cashiering for the Band and Athletic boosters; just to name a few. And, at Norma's house, coffee, pound-cake and good conversation were always in ample supply.
Norma was an ardent dancer, her zest for life found clear expression in her dancing. After retiring from teaching in 1992, she and J.B. lived in the Dallas area and spent many years traveling to Round Dance and Square Dance gatherings across the state of Texas and the southwest.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband (Adrian Taylor), a sister, Vondell Reed, and a brother, Billy Akin.
Norma is survived by her husband, J.B. Morrison of Irving. Two sons, Greg Taylor and wife Jill of Lubbock; Chuck Taylor and wife Brenda of Amarillo.
