Obituary

Mary Catherine Boyd, 90, of Tyler went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Mary C. was born in Littlefield, Tx, May 25, 1931, to Samuel and Thelma Hampton. A few years later, the family moved to a farm close to the Roosevelt community. Mary C. graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1948. She attended Texas Tech University for one year then put her education on hold to marry Herbert (Hop) Boyd on October 6, 1949. They started their life journey together in Idalou, Texas. In 1950, they moved to Lorenzo where Mary worked for the Lorenzo State Bank and Hop was a farmer. Mary C. and Hop started their family with the birth of Gaylon in 1954; Gary in 1955; Sam in 1959; Tony in 1962 and finally had a girl, Kittye, in 1965! With a desire to teach, Mary C. decided to go back to college in the summer of 1967. She graduated in 1970 (with high honors) with a B.S. in Education from Texas Tech University, and later got a Master's in Education in 1974. After teaching math at Lorenzo High School for a few years, she became the school counselor, a position she kept until she retired on May 29, 1998. In her later years, Mary C. started Boyd Real Estate serving Lorenzo and the surrounding area.

Mary C. was a great mother and loving wife who taught her children how to work hard and be honest in all they did. Family was very important to her. As soon as she had grandchildren, she started to have cousin's camp every summer at her house. The grandchildren eagerly looked forward to their time with "grandma and grandpa" not only during cousin's camp, but also during the holidays. If you were part of her family, you received a birthday card with money or a present every year until she passed away.

She was a follower of Jesus Christ and a longtime member of the United Methodist Church. Preceding her in death are: Her husband, Herbert; her parents, Samuel and Thelma Hampton; five siblings, Rueal Weaver, Tracy Weaver, Thelma Kathleen "Sissy" Garrard, Walter Weaver, Samye Jean Jones; a daughter-in-law, Sue Boyd; a grandchild, Ryne Erickson; and a great-grandchild, Abe Lowder.
