Janice
Leatherwood
Jul 1, 1941 — Apr 9, 2022
Vernon
Janice Leatherwood, 80, passed away, April 9, 2022, in Vernon, Texas. She was born July 1, 1941, in Crosby County, Texas, to Billie and Marie (Stockton) Cornelius. On July 10, 1959, Janice married Kenneth Leatherwood. They raised three children: Amy, Betsy, and Dee.
Janice generously gave of her time to family, friends, and the community. She donated her time to the numerous clubs and organizations her children were involved in. She played the piano and organ at the First United Methodist Church of Crosbyton for many years as well as taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Janice was an expert seamstress designing and sewing most of her girls' clothing and some for her son when he was young. She also designed special quilts and diaper bags for grandchildren. The grandchildren and then great grandchildren were Meme and Buddy's pride and joy. Janice and Kenneth literally drove all over Texas and to other states to watch grandkids compete in their activities. She treated every child, grandchild, friends of her children and grandchildren the same. In her mind they were all blood relatives. Many called her Mom or Meme. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh and her world-famous sugar cookies. Janice always had several dozen prepared for gatherings of friends and family. She also regularly mailed a few dozen cookies overseas when grandsons were deployed.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth, and children Amy Jarrett, Betsy Harkey, and Dee (Pam) Leatherwood. Grandchildren: Jay (Meagan) Jarrett, John (Bridget) Jarrett, Jed (Carrie) Jarrett, Ashley (Chuck) Edwards, Cory (Katy) Keith, Logan Harkey, Tate (Kirsten) Leatherwood. Also surviving Meme are 8 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Dwayne and Sue Cornelius, and sons-in-law, Gary Don Harkey and Earl Jarrett.
Grandchildren are serving as pallbearers.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Wichita Falls and Roxanne Ochoa for their care and compassion during Janice's final days.
