In joyful celebration of the life of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, and friend, we come together to remember Hoyler Jeanne Moore Mayes, 96 of Lubbock, TX, formerly of Ralls, TX. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Ralls First United Methodist Church with Dr. Michael Beals officiating. Burial will follow in the Ralls Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls. Visitation will be held Saturday from 12-2 p.m. in the Ralls First United Methodist Church Parlor.
Jeanne was a cherished individual known for her deep love for playing the piano, nurturing all around her, and creating lasting bonds with dear friends. She undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the hearts she touched. Her unwavering devotion to family extended to her role as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, bringing warmth and joy to the generations she embraced and filling their lives with love and laughter. Her dedication to serving the church for many years added a melody of joy to her life.
Jeanne passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, January 22, 2024 in Lubbock, TX. Jeanne was born with a song in her heart on December 8, 1927 in Olney, TX to Minnie Lee Hoyler and Willie Olen Moore. The family moved to Lamesa shortly after Jeanne's birth, where she spent her childhood on the family farm. Jeanne began playing the piano at the age of 5 years old. She graduated from Lamesa High School in 1944. She attended both McMurry College in Abilene and Texas Tech University in Lubbock, studying what she most loved, Music. While attending Texas Tech, she met and soon married William "Bill" Harrison Mayes on May 18,1947 in Ralls, TX. They had two daughters who were the light of their lives, Vicki Lynn and Jerri Carol. Bill and Jeanne lived their lives as part of the Ralls community until moving to Lubbock in 1981.
Jeanne was a member of the Ralls First United Methodist Church where she served as organist and pianist for 47 years. She played one of the area's only pipe organs and served the people of the Ralls community by playing for numerous weddings, funerals, graduations, community events, and even a few parties. She taught piano in the Ralls community for several years. Jeanne worked as a bookkeeper for Mayes Gas, Logan Buick, and later worked for the Department of Agriculture as a seed analyst from 1983-1994. At the time of her death, she was living as a resident of the Sherick Memorial Home community where she met and made many special friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Thomas Garland Moore, and sisters Billie Maxine Moore McGregor, and Velda Lou Moore Dorethy, her husband, William Harrison Mayes, and her beloved daughter, Vicki Lynn Mayes Terrell Burdine and son-in-law, David Lee Terrell.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Jerri Carol Mayes Adams and her husband David of Lubbock, TX. She was beloved "Mama Jean" to six grandchildren, Timothy Lee Terrell, of Capistrano Beach, CA, Michelle Terrell of Long Beach, CA, Trae Lynn Terrell Diede (Chris), of Dripping Springs, TX, Trinity Carol Terrell Rutledge (Jake), of Sand Springs, OK, Calli Lynn Adams Christenson (Dylan), of Houston, TX, Lindsey Carol Adams Dearing (Riley), of Lubbock, TX and Ashley Lauren Adams Stuart (Bobby), of Lubbock, TX.
Mama Jean will live on in the hearts of her 16 "greats": Jack, Zoe and Kira Terrell, Gwen and Beau Diede, Chase Terrell, Brody & Wyatt Rutledge, Samuel, Seth and Henry Christenson, Crew, Camp and Cale Dearing, and Harrison and Sullivan Stuart.
Many nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends Patsy Gray, Lela Leftwich, and Mary Lou Gilbreath.
We would like to thank Sharon and Stephanie and all of the ladies of the Sherick for providing a wonderful living environment for mom for the past two years. Also, thank you to Leslie and Mary and the staff at Interim Hospice for taking such good care of mom. Thank you to Dalia, mom's dear friend and caregiver for many years, and Dalia's daughter, Norma, for the loving care they provided. Thank you to the staff at Crown Point Health Suites. Your service and care are deeply appreciated.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ralls.
