Helen Hash, age 93, of Albuquerque (formerly of Crosbyton & Lubbock), died peacefully at home on June 24 surrounded by her family. Absent from the body, present with the Lord. Helen was born in Mumford, TX in 1921 and was the 5th of 8 children. The family moved from Mumford in 1925 to settle in Crosbyton, TX, where the family bought and worked a farm – sustaining themselves mostly from the land and bartering for other supplies.
Helen graduated from Crosbyton High School and took post graduate studies at Stephen F. Austin in Bryan. She later married her high school sweetheart, Bill Hash, in 1941, and they lived on a farm outside Crosbyton. They had 2 children, Clay, born in 1943 and Karen, born in 1947. Helen was a farm wife and stay at home mom until both her children were in school. She then entered the workforce in Crosbyton and worked at the County Clerk's office, The Crosby County Tax Assessors Office, Crosbyton Seed Company, and finished her career at Caprock Community Action where she retired at the age of 75. Soon after retirement, Helen had a hip replacement. An outcome of this was that the Dr. recommended that she move out of her 2-story home in Crosbyton because it had a winding staircase.
Helen moved to Lubbock in 1997 and began attending Southside Church of Christ. Since her hip replacement, she was able to be more active and enjoyed attending church, getting out with friends and visiting nursing homes and singing to the residents. Helen's faith is one of her greatest legacies to family and friends. She loved Jesus and studied her bible daily.
Family was very important to Helen, and she was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, and loyal friend. She, and her baby sister, Martha (now 91) were able to stay in touch over the years and enjoyed a life-long relationship that is continued today by their daughters.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Karen Heames and husband Terry, sister, Martha Novosad of Bryan, TX, nieces: Diane Sandlin and husband John from Austin, Sandra Hash and Misty Hayes from Lubbock, TX, nephews: Dan Novosad and wife, Tara from Cypress, TX, and Whit Hash from Cloudcroft, NM. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Clay in 2006, and 6 of her 7 siblings.
