Doris was born to Emory Isaac Brownlow and Grace Elizabeth (Robertson) Brownlow on December 15, 1923, on the family farm in the McAdoo community, located in eastern Crosby County, near the Dickens County line. She married the love of her life, Earl Caleb "Buck" Van Meter Jr., on February 19, 1941, at the home of her grandparents, James R. Robertson and Nellie Madge (Box) Robertson, McAdoo, Dickens County, Texas.

Doris was an active member of McAdoo United Methodist Church, serving in the Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service which was later known as the United Methodist Women, served on the Administrative Board Committees, taught elementary and adult Sunday School classes, was a leader in vacation Bible school and a sponsor in the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Among her roles in the community, she served as President of the P.T.A., participated in plays sponsored by that organization, was a member of an "outsiders" volleyball team, was actively involved with all extra curricular activities in which her children were participants, including substitute girls basketball coach at a regional tournament. Doris was admired for her artistic gifts in sewing, knitting, crocheting, painting and sketching. One of her favorite past times was playing canasta. She was a member of the canasta club for over 50 years. In later years, she enjoyed traveling with close friends touring locations all over the United States and Canada. She loved to interact with her family, whether it was on a deer or elk hunting trip to Colorado, attending athletic games where kids, grand kids or great grand kids were playing, going with them to tractor pulls , having Easter egg hunts, or just keeping them at home where they could all enjoy the outdoors on the farm.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl, on August 27, 1991; father Emory Isaac Brownlow, on October 12, 1963; mother Grace Elizabeth Tucker, on Feb. 9, 1997; brothers, Emory Glenn Brownlow, Feb. 18, 1999, and James Marvin Brownlow, Dec. 4, 2007.
