Donald Ray Poteet of Post, TX passed away March 2, 2026. Don was born on November 30, 1939, in Tucumcari, NM., to the late Sam and Mary Poteet. He graduated from Trent High School, attended Abilene Christian College, graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science, went to Sul Ross University and received his Master's Degree of Science in Range Animal Science in 1972.
Don lived and loved life to the fullest even at an early age he was active in sports, showed cattle, was in school plays, and was a talented artist. Don rode horses and bulls in Rodeos, he served proudly in the Army 1959-1962 as a Staff Sargent E-6, and was a Vietnam Veteran. He also loved playing the guitar and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Don lived in Tennessee training cutting horses. He moved to Alaska during the Alaska Oil Spill and owned a consulting firm in Alaska. He later retired from the state of Alaska. His heart always belonged to the small-town life he grew up in, so Post, Texas was where he hung his hat up.
He is survived by three daughters Katherine Shelton of Denton, Texas, Charlotte Poteet of Lubbock, Texas, Cynthia (Edwin) Brunner of Idalou, Texas, two granddaughters, Samantha Brunner (Josh Uresta) of Lubbock, Texas, Robin Brunner of Anchorage AK, one great grandson, Michael Brunner, two nieces, and nephews, and many other loving family members and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Sam and Mary Poteet, brother Jimmie Poteet, former spouse Rita Poteet, son in law, Jim Shelton and dear friend Polly Cravy.
Family and friends and those that loved him dearly will be able to gather to Celebrate his life March 7, 2026 between 10:00am-12:00pm at the Adams Funeral Home in Ralls.
