David Ray Upchurch, 85, of Afton passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016 at his residence. He was born January 13, 1931 in Hill County to Felix Marvin Upchurch Sr. and Maggie Ann (Dennis) Upchurch. Ray lived in many places during his life and held many occupations, including being an ordained Baptist minister, but when he settled in the small town of Afton, Texas, with his two youngest children Megan and Johnathan Upchurch, he was at home. He will be remembered as a loving father, who was a helpful and generous friend and neighbor. Most men his age have retired, but Ray enjoyed work and worked all his life until his death at age 85. Ray was respected and loved, by all who knew him, for his strength and his love of life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Felix Sr. and Maggie Upchurch; two brothers; Melvin Upchurch and Felix Upchurch Jr.; and his daughter, Debbie Teasley.

Ray is survived by his three daughters; Megan Upchurch of Hattiesville, Mississippi; Vicki Sahagen and Pam Penny of Bedford, Texas; his son, Johnathan Upchurch of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his brother William Upchurch of Crosbyton, Texas; two sisters; Vera Pierce of Crosbyton, Texas; Juanita Cutts of Victorville, California; four stepchildren; Victor Howard, Minnie Durfee, Dollie Young, and James(Bubba) Richardson; five grandchildren; Trae Huish; John Young; Amanda Kent; Gayla Worthham; Patrecia Whitley; and numerous great-grandchildren and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 2 pm at the Crosbyton First Assembly of God Church, located at 112 N. Durham in Crosbyton, Texas.
