Charles Roy
Brown
Feb 8, 1941 — Jan 28, 2024
Lubbock
Charles Roy "Charlie" Brown, 82, passed from this life Sunday morning, January 28, 2024. Charlie was born February 8, 1941 in Atoka, Oklahoma to Claude Arthur and Trula Mae Willingham Brown. He lived in Throckmorton for a time, then moved to Dalhart, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Abilene Christian University, where he received a degree in marketing. While in college, he spent a summer or two in Aruba, where his parents were missionaries.
Charlie married Judy Darlene Ellison October 11, 1963, at Broadway Church of Christ Chapel in Lubbock. He met his wife, Judy, at ACU. They had been friends for a long time before Charlie realized it was more than just a friendship and asked Judy for a date. She laughed because she thought he was kidding! Their romance had a great start. But the "yes" came and it turned into a love that lasted just over 60 years. They lived in Iowa Park, where they raised their children, Becky and Toby. Charlie was an elder at Faith Village in Wichita Falls for 23 years.
Charlie worked in manufacturing jobs in Dallas and Wichita Falls. He finished his career as the Director at Western Christian Foundation, where they printed Christian Literature sent to Spanish speaking countries throughout the world. Despite never learning the language, he found an excellent translator, who helped him make many meaningful connections. Charlie and Judy retired in 2006 and moved back to Lubbock for the third and final time. They attended Twelfth Street Church of Christ in Shallowater, where they found some of their dearest friends. Charlie served as an elder there for 12 years. Charlie was an incredibly talented artist. Many knew of his exquisite knife making skills, as his knives have been treasured gifts to friends and family. Few knew however, that he was also an incredibly talented watercolor artist. As he developed back problems, he transitioned from knife making, to making custom leather holsters for pistols, many of which were ordered and shipped around the world. He was deeply rooted in his faith, and many have shared their appreciation of the wisdom he shared. He impacted so many people in the life he led as a strong and devoted man of God.
Charles has gone by many different names. In high school, he answered to Butch Brown. At ACU he went by Shod. As an adult, he was known as Charlie Brown. His favorite name, however, was what his grandchildren called him, Chuckie. Charlie found great joy in his family. He found his best friends in his brothers-in-law, Terry and Brooks Ellison. He loved hunting and fishing with his son and grandsons. He taught his daughter how to fly fish and LOVED Judy's chocolate pies. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling to any destination to see his kids and grandkids participate in choir, soccer, football, stock shows, track meets, barrel racing, and welding competitions. One of the families' most treasured memories was the 60th Wedding Anniversary trip to Colorado the summer of 2023. Four generations were in attendance to commemorate and celebrate the love that had grown through six decades of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Trula Brown, in-laws Duward and Frankie Ellison, a sister-in-law Sarah Brown and grandson, Kason Harrell.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy, daughter Becky Buckingham and husband Kent of Santa Fe, NM, son Toby Brown and wife Jennifer of Tulia, TX. Five grandchildren Channing Harrell and fiancé Beau Geier, Slade Harrell, Justin Brown and wife Macey, Laura Spann and husband Dylan, and Emma Brown. Two great granddaughters Ellie Jeanne Brown and Birdie Lynn Spann. One older brother, Art Brown, two brothers-in-law and their wives Terry and Karen Ellison and Brooks and Belinda Ellison and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
