Arvil Lee
Campbell
Feb 13, 1930 — Jan 1, 2024
Lubbock
Arvil Lee Campbell 93, passed away January 1, 2024. He was born in Petrolia, Texas on February 13, 1930 to Arthur Lee and Lena Pearl Summers Campbell. Arvil and his parents moved to Crosby County in 1931 at the age of 8 months. He had 1 younger brother, Delton Lewis Campbell. Arvil attended Fairview Elementary and Ralls High School where he met the love of his life Wanda Faye Amonett Campbell. They graduated May of 1948 and were married July 3rd. They were married for 74 years. They had 2 daughters, 3 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, and 6 great grandkids. The family attended Cone Church of Christ and then later Quaker Ave. Church of Christ in Lubbock. Arvil became a member of the Texas State Guard and was issued a motorcycle for training and and honor guard service. He held the rank of Captain when he resigned his commission. He was fascinated by planes and flying. During WWII he would sleep outside during the summer and watch the glider planes being towed out of the air base in Lubbock where the pilots were trained. He earned his pilot's license at the age of 40. Arvil knew the value of hard work. He worked neighbor's wheat harvest at the age of 12, and carried out groceries. As a young married man he worked at a gas station/grocery store where he fixed flats, pumped gas, and sliced bologna. Arvil returned to farming in 1949 by working for his father in law. During harvest, he would take a 2nd job at the gin starting with driving trucks and ending with being the head bookkeeper for 4 years. Arvil Lee started farming for himself in 1956. His father suddenly passed when Arvil was 32. He was a very good son and tried to care for his mother, Pearl. She was a little stubborn and very independent so it wasn't always easy. Upon his father-in-laws sudden death in 1967 Arvil once again had to be a rock for the family and help with the farming. Arvil has farmed that same land from 1949 until his retirement in 2018. He has truly labored all his life but that is not all there was to him. During his career Arvil was activein the Texas Farmers Union, Pleasant Hill Co-op Gin, Federal Land Bank, South Plains Electric Co-op,Crosby County Fuel and PCCA. He loved fishing and would go every chance he got. He combined his love of flying with his love of fishing. He, JW Mullins and other friends and family would take their planes and fly to Canada for a week of fishing in the wilderness.
On January 1st it became a tradition for Arvil and Wanda to host a meal of black-eyed peas, cabbage, cornbread, and sausage and for an extra treat turkey and dressing along with it. The black-eyed peas were for luck and the cabbage for prosperity. Family and friends were all invited. Many of Wanda's cousins would come make a party of it. Arvil said he didn't find January 1 as much fun anymore since all those dear friends and relatives have passed. Deborah and I like to think that our mother, all their dear friends, and family gathered around him in the wee hours of January 1, 2024 and said "Come on Arvil Lee!!! Lets go have some of that black-eyed peas, cabbage, and maybe some cornbread and celebrate your arrival". His family will dearly miss him.
Arvil Lee is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother.
Those left to cherish his memory are; two daughters Deborah Cole and husband Darrell of Lubbock, Arvilla James and husband John of Lubbock; 4 grandchildren, Dustin Cole and wife Julie, Daniel Cole, Jason James and wife Amber, Whitney Cambron and husband Josh; six great grandchildren, Bella Cole, Scarlett Cole, Jonah Cambron, Callie Cambron, Jewel James and Jax James. Arvil is survived by brother-in-law Clifford Amonett and wife Margaret of Lubbock and sister-in-law Marjorie Reynolds of Lubbock as well as many wonderful nephews and nieces.
